Feeling overwhelmed by thoughts is something many of us experience, everyday.
Life can get busy, and the overwhelming and consistent tasks of work, family activities, and personal commitments can make it challenging to focus (even for the best of us!).
So, how do I stop being overwhelmed by thoughts? One excellent approach I’ve discovered is to simplify my tasks by identifying and concentrating on the 3 most important ones each day. It helps eliminate all the noise in my mind.
This strategy not only helps me manage my workload but also keeps me grounded and focused.
In this blog post, I will share how this method works and how it can help you regain control over your thoughts.
How Do I Stop Being Overwhelmed by Thoughts
1. Understanding the Overwhelm
Before we dive into the solution, it’s important to understand what overwhelm actually feels like.
For me, it is that heavy feeling when your mind races with too many thoughts or tasks, making it hard to concentrate on anything.
For you, you might find yourself:
- Struggling to focus on one task at a time.
- Feeling anxious about unfinished tasks.
- Experiencing physical symptoms like tension or fatigue or digestion issues.
These feelings can stop productivity and affect your overall well-being.
Recognising that you’re not alone in this struggle is the first step toward finding a solution.
2. My Strategy: Focus on 3 Key Tasks
In my journey as a mental health speaker, I’ve developed a straightforward technique that significantly reduces my overwhelm: focusing on the 3 most important tasks of the day.
Here’s how you can implement this strategy too:
- Take a moment to reflect.
- Write down your tasks.
- Prioritise them into the 3 most important.
- Focus on those only for the day.
Research shows that mastering time management not only boosts your productivity but also enhances your well-being.
Claessens et al. (2007) found that time management improves control, satisfaction, and health, while lowering stress.
3. How This Method Helps Reduce Overwhelm
By concentrating on just 3 tasks, you can experience several benefits:
- Clarity of Purpose: Focusing on a limited number of tasks clarifies your objectives, making it easier to prioritise your day.
- Reduced Stress: Knowing exactly what you need to accomplish can help alleviate feelings of anxiety and stress.
- Increased Productivity: When you channel your energy into a few significant tasks, you’re more likely to complete them and feel a sense of accomplishment (I know I sure do!)
4. Stop Being Overwhelmed: Practical Techniques to Enhance Focus
To make this strategy even more effective, consider incorporating these practical techniques into your routine:
- Time Blocking: Dedicate specific blocks of time to work on each task without distractions. For instance, spend 30 minutes on writing, followed by 30 minutes engaging on social media.
- Use a Planner: Keep a daily planner to organise your tasks and deadlines. Writing things down can help you visualise your progress.
- Limit Distractions: Identify what distracts you and find ways to minimise those interruptions. This might mean turning off notifications on your phone or setting aside specific times to check emails (for example, checking your emails only in the morning, at noon and late afternoon. It’s definitely not a perfect option but it definitely works for me to lower the overwhelm).
5. Building a Supportive Community
Creating a supportive environment is essential as you tackle your top 3 tasks.
Engage with others who understand your journey, whether through online forums or social media groups focused on mental health and personal growth. For me personally, Facebook groups has been a lifesaver!
Sharing your experiences with like-minded individuals can provide encouragement and valuable insights.
When you share your goals, you gain accountability and motivation. Being part of a community provides fresh perspectives and encouragement, making it easier to push through challenges and stay focused on what truly matters.
I attend a fortnightly meet-up for likeminded women in the same season of life as me. It brings me so much energy and helps me to stay focused.
6. How Do I Stop Being Overwhelmed by Thoughts: Embracing Self-Care as a Foundation
Finally, never underestimate the importance of self-care in managing overwhelm.
Prioritising your mental and emotional well-being will empower you to tackle your tasks more effectively.
Here are some self-care practices you can adopt:
- Take Regular Breaks: Step away from your work to recharge. Short breaks can help refresh your mind.
- Engage in Physical Activity: Exercise is a proven stress reliever. Even a short walk can help clear your head.
- Practice Mindfulness: Techniques like meditation or deep breathing can help you regain focus when your mind feels cluttered.
A recent study shows that focusing on important tasks can help us feel happier and better each day. As highlighted in the study “Reconsidering Self Care” by Bressi and Vaden, prioritising specific tasks can significantly enhance our sense of fulfillment. “Self care remains an important vehicle for promoting worker well-being” (Bressi & Vaden, 2017).
