If you do, however, take the time to care for yourself, say no to activities or events if you feel empty, and if you actively try and keep your emotional tank full, you are better able to deal with the unexpected.

Do you always catch yourself being negative, looking for drama or the worst? Don’t do this; instead, think positively.

When you think more positively, you will be better able to deal with unexpected moments because you already have a great mindset established.

When you have good people around you that you can rely on, when you have at least one person you can call at a moment’s notice, it makes the sudden traumatic moments bearable.

Being able to rally your support network is so helpful in times of unexpected challenges.

Whether it be your partner, friends, co-workers or family, gathering these people in times of crisis is important. Knowing already that you have built a strong foundation of support with them means you can rely on them when life happens.

It can be tough to try and establish new connections to help you through your trauma. The people you have already built a relationship with can be your biggest supporters in times of need. They know you well and will know what you need and when you need it.

4) Pursue stress-relieving hobbies and activities.

When life takes you on unexpected paths

Do something you love regularly, like going to the beach, a dance class, a football game, a reading or book club, or anything that makes you happy.

If you can start regularly doing something you love, it will help build up your emotional tank. This means you will have a greater capacity to deal with the unexpected horrible things life throws your way.

You will also have an outlet already that you can use to de-stress. If you’re already attending a class for your hobby, it’s a good idea to continue attending it, especially during a traumatic event. It can serve as a quick way to destress.

However, if you don’t have a hobby or a fun way of releasing your stress, you may need to find one during moments of turmoil. Not having a go-to activity can cause even more stress during unexpected situations.

5. Have a financial safety net.

Financial security can be a significant factor in coping with unexpected events. It’s crucial to have a financial safety net to fall back on in case of unexpected events like job loss, illness, or accidents.
