Although being depressed can feel like the end of the world, it’s important to remember that you don’t have to feel this way forever. There is hope and a way to feel better again.
You can use several techniques to improve your mood and restore your spark, regardless of whether you’re struggling with personal issues, work-related stress, or a combination of things.
Nature therapy is one of the best treatments that has ever helped me.
When feeling down, I quickly find relief by walking along the beach, at the park, or just sitting under some trees. It’s free and enjoyable to take a walk in the outdoors. It helps to take my mind off my problems and feel grounded with the earth. It makes me feel present and is a beautiful mindful practice.

1. Connect with Nature
Connecting with nature is one of the best ways to get your spark back. Here are some ways to do so:
- Go for a walk in the park or take a hike in nature.

When I start to think about the vast complexities of nature, it makes my problems feel small in comparison. This is particularly true when I am at the beach.
The enormous body of water and the endless ocean show me how big the universe and God are. How big my problems seem to me becomes insignificant compared to the large scale of the deep blue sea.
Many other elements of nature also help to keep us grounded and feel a sense of calm and belonging.
Here are some ways to practice gratitude and connect with nature:
- Write down three things you’re grateful for each day, such as the sunshine on your face or the sound of birds singing.
- Keep a gratitude journal and reflect on the natural wonders you’ve experienced, like a sunset or a hike in the woods.
- Practice mindfulness meditation in nature and focus on the present moment, such as the feel of the grass under your feet or the rustling of leaves in the wind.
- Thank someone who has positively impacted your life, and go for a walk together in a nearby park or nature reserve.
3. Engage in Creative Activities and Nature Therapy
Engaging in creative activities can help you express your emotions, reduce stress, and find joy in the present moment.

One of my favourite ways to be creative with nature is to paint it. I like to paint and use art to reflect what nature teaches me. This brings me joy and gives me the extra spark to get on with the week ahead.

Nature therapy can also be a powerful way to boost your mood and improve your mental health while spending time with others. Here are some ways to reach out and connect with nature:

- Join a community group or club that aligns with your interests, such as dog walking at the beach or a gardening club, and connect with others who share your passion for nature.

5. Take Care of Yourself

- Drink enough water to stay hydrated, and consider carrying a reusable water bottle on hikes or walks in nature.
- Take breaks throughout the day to stretch or move around. Consider doing so in a natural setting, like taking a quick walk outside or practising yoga on the beach.
- Practice positive self-talk and self-compassion, and consider doing so while surrounded by the beauty of nature. Take a moment to appreciate the natural world around you and remind yourself of the healing power it can offer.
6. My Personal Experience
Nature therapy has played a significant role in my experience of getting my spark back. Spending time in nature and appreciating the natural beauty around me has helped me feel more connected and grounded.

Moreover, practising gratitude in nature has been a powerful tool for me. Focusing on the beauty of the natural world and expressing gratitude for it has helped me shift my perspective and find more joy in my daily life.
