Mental health as a mother of an autistic child is not always about crisis.
Most of the time, nothing big is wrong. You are coping.
- You are functioning.
- You are getting through the day.
- But something feels off.
That quiet unsettled feeling is often your mental health sliding.
Slowly and silently and no one teaches you how to stay on top of it.
Mental health as a mother of an autistic child

1. Feeling off without knowing why
Many mums tell me this. “I don’t know what’s wrong. I just feel unsettled.”
Nothing has happened. The day is not falling apart. But your body feels tense. Your thoughts feel busy. As a mother of an autistic child, this is common.
Your nervous system is always working.
- Always adjusting.
- Always scanning.
- When you ignore these early signs, your mental health continues to slide.
2. Mental health does not break, it slides

Mental health rarely crashes overnight.
Mental health slides when:
- You keep pushing through
- You tell yourself you are fine
- You ignore small signals from your body
- You put your needs last
You usually notice it late at night. Or when everything suddenly feels heavy. This is why staying on top of your mental health matters.
3. One small action can regulate everything

One day, I noticed I felt unsettled. Nothing huge. Just enough to feel off. So I stopped.
I did one small thing:
- I went outside
- I sat in the sunshine
- I slowed my breathing
That was it. Within minutes, my nervous system settled. I felt calmer. Clearer and more in control.
This is regulation. This is not fixing life. It’s about caring for your mental health early.
4. This is what regulation really looks like

Regulation is not a perfect routine. It is not another task. It is noticing early and responding gently.
Mental health as a mother of an autistic child is about staying steady. Not waiting until you are exhausted. This is what staying on top of your mental health looks like in real life.
5. Why mums need ongoing support

Most support comes too late.
Support often arrives:
- After burnout
- After breakdown
- After exhaustion
But mental health needs ongoing care. Just like physical health. You do not wait until your body collapses to care for it. Your mental health deserves the same attention.
6. From my own life

I asked myself this too. Why does my mental health feel off when I am doing everything I can?
The answer was simple. I was not broken. I just had no ongoing support.
That is why I created ASD Mum Club.
It exists to help mums stay on top of their mental and emotional health.
Before it slides.
“This is not about fixing yourself. It is about noticing the early signs.”
