In recovering from PTSD, self-care is essential to the healing process. While there is no one-size-fits-all solution for PTSD recovery, taking care of yourself is an important step that can significantly improve your mental health.
This post is all about PTSD coping strategies.
What is PTSD?
PTSD, or post-traumatic stress disorder, is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. I experienced PTSD after a fatal car accident where I was the sole survivor.
Symptoms of PTSD can include flashbacks, nightmares, avoidance, and hyperarousal. PTSD can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background. I avoided the site of the car crash for years.
Only when I fully healed was I able to drive past the area where the trauma occurred. PTSD can take a long time to recover, so knowing the right coping strategies will help you deal with the daily stresses of living with PTSD.
Why is self-care necessary for PTSD recovery?
Self-care is essential for anyone’s mental health, but it’s essential for those with PTSD. Self-care can help you cope with your symptoms, reduce stress, and improve your overall well-being.
When I started to engage in self-care activities and prioritised them, I was able to calm my nervous system and reduce my stress level. It helped me better to cope with the PTSD that I was suffering from.
When you care for yourself, you’re giving your mind and body the tools to heal and recover.
What can you do for self-care when you’re busy working and have no time for self-care?
Many people with PTSD struggle to find time for self-care. This usually is when busy with work, school, or other responsibilities. However, there are plenty of ways to practice self-care, even if you’re short on time.
I remember during my recovery if even I just gave myself 10 minutes of self-care such as having a bath, going for a walk in nature, reading a book, doing skincare and beauty treatments. These were simple ideas that didn’t take long; however, doing them regularly over time helped me heal.
Here are some simple self-care practices you can incorporate into your busy schedule:
Take breaks throughout the day.
Even if it’s just a five-minute break to stretch or breathe deeply, it can help you reset and refocus.
Practice mindfulness.
Mindfulness is being present in the moment and fully engaged in your surroundings. Taking a few minutes to practice mindfulness can help you reduce stress and improve your overall well-being.
Prioritise sleep.
Getting enough sleep is essential for your mental health. Establish a bedtime routine and create a sleep-conducive environment to help you get the rest you need.
Connect with others.
Social support is essential for mental health, so connect with friends, family, or support groups.
Practice self-compassion.
Be kind to yourself and practice self-compassion. Give yourself permission to take breaks and prioritize your mental health.
Self-care is an essential part of PTSD recovery. While it can be challenging to find time for self-care, even small actions can make a big difference in your mental health. Remember to be kind to yourself and prioritize your well-being; you’ll be on your way to a healthier, happier you.
